Dr. Subodh Verma is a Canadian expert on vascular biology, endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis and has published extensively on the subject. As the undergraduate pharmacy gold medalist, he went on to pursue an MSc and PhD in cardiovascular pharmacology at the University of British Columbia under the supervision of Dr. John H. McNeill, who incidentally also trained Dr. Verma’s father in the 1970’s. Dr. Verma then pursued an MD degree and post-doctoral fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Calgary with Dr. Todd J. Anderson. Following completion of his residency training in cardiac surgery at University of Toronto, he was appointed as Associate Professor of Surgery and Pharmacology, and Director, Traineeship in Atherosclerosis, and recently awarded the Canada Research Chair in Atherosclerosis.

Dr. Verma has received numerous national and international awards, including the MRC Fellowship, ranked 1st of 404 applicants, AHFMR fellowship, Canadian Diabetes Association fellowship, PMAC Award, Pfizer research prize, American College of Cardiology young investigator award – 3 years in a row, Canadian Cardiovascular Society young investigator award, Society of Vascular Biology and Medicine young investigator award, International Society of Heart Research young investigator award, American Association of Thoracic Surgery young investigator award, Western Thoracic Society young investigator award, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons research award, James T Willerson vulnerable plaque young investigator award, Burroughs Wellcome MRC Award and the Paul Cartier Cardiac Surgery Young Investigator Award. He is also the recipient of the Canadian Association of Physicians of Indian Heritage Clinician Scientist Award.

He is the only candidate in the history of the American College of Cardiology to have won the young investigator award three years in a row in all the three possible categories, of basic cardiovascular medicine, cardiovascular pharmacology, and clinical cardiology and cardiac surgery.

He is also the section editor of Canadian Journal of Cardiology, and serves as a reviewer/editorial board of Lancet, Circulation, Circulation Research, ATVB, Amer J Physiol, J Cardiac Surgery, BMJ to name a few.

Dr. Verma’s has an active research program in Toronto, which focuses on the role of risk factors on endothelial function and vascular homeostasis, and the interface between insulin resistance and atherothrombosis. His laboratory is funded by the CIHR, HSF, CDA and PSI. He has published approximately 140 peer reviewed papers, and over 300 abstracts, with several papers appearing in Circulation, Circulation Research, NEJM and Nature.

Dr. Verma and his wife Mekhul, have two children, Raj (3 years old) and Meena (7 months old).
